Dear Doctor,

At the beginning of October, I had my lower right wisdom tooth extracted, with local anaesthesia. The procedure took almost an hour. It didn’t come out, and the dentist had to strike and carve for almost an hour. Afterwards, I was instructed to take an Algopyrin at home and I was told that I will be able to go to work the next day. I had such a bad pain that I have been on sick leave for two weeks and after two days I had to go to the dentist on call. It was only there that I was given painkillers and antibiotics. Since then, the pain has been constant: I’m not able to chew, hardly to bite (for example, bread crust), because I immediately feel a sharp pain at the site of the surgery, somewhere very deep inside. My ear has also started to hurt some while ago: I’ve been having this pungent pain almost all day, which sometimes suddenly becomes really sharp.
I would like to ask how much time usually the post-extraction pain persists? (My dentist said that it sometimes can last for a very long time.)
And, is this pain still considered normal? If not, where I should go? For X-ray, or an otorhinolaryngologist?
Thank you for your reply!

Kind regards,
Lisa

Kedves Lisa S.!

Complaints after the extraction of a wisdom tooth can last up to 3 to 4 weeks. If the pain does in no way show a decreasing tendency, an X-ray of the region involved should be done. Healing may be accelerated with soft-laser treatment.

Get well soon!

Üdvözlettel,
Dr. Németh Ágnes
